Travel Day

Sometimes things actually go as scheduled. Today, everything worked perfectly.  Is this a good omen? Will we be pleasantly surprised tomorrow when we get our room assignment?  Read my South America blog to understand my trepidation.

After a mostly sleepless night, when Michael was awoken by dings, beeps, and chimes from one or more iGadgets accidentally left on -- by both of us -- and after a heated discussion about whose fault it was, neither of use really was able to get back to sleep.  We finally got out of bed at 4 am, got dressed and woke Beverly Kostrinsky up as she so graciously volunteered to drive us to the airport at the ungodly hour of 5 am (We spent the night at her house).

I drove the "moving van" to the airport. We could not have put another thing in the car, which was stuffed with 4 humongous suitcases, and 4 assorted carry on bags.  Check in and security were a breeze. We had to go through one of those xray machines and of course I was stopped and they said they saw something in my back, and had to be hand-patted down.  Ugh, don't they teach those TSA agents what pins and rods look like when one has had back surgery?  Our flight departed at 6:45 am, on time, and arrived in Phoenix, where we had a one hour layover.  We had to change terminals so got a good walk in, bought stuff for lunch and boarded the flight to Fort Lauderdale.  Very civilized; however, boarding a plane makes one feel like a sardine - lets see how many people we can squeeze in with all the luggage and stuff.  We had upgraded to aisle seats -- translation -- we paid more money for the privilege to do so.  It was worth it as we both had an empty center seat next to us.

Our arrival in Fort Lauderdale was uneventful. The weather was a bit humid, but the temperature was pleasant. The hotel is nice and was near shopping and restaurants. I stocked up on some sundries that we would need for such a long trip.  We repacked several suitcases now that weight was not an issue and got rid of our sweaters and jeans.

Here is a great link for you to follow the ship in real time. A map is displayed with the ship's actual position.
